Sophos announces top ten web and email-borne malicious threats for September 2007 IT security and control firm Sophos has revealed the most prevalent malware threats causing problems for computer users around the world during September 2007.
The figures, compiled by Sophos's global network of monitoring stations, have shown a rise in the percentage of infected email. Overall in September, 0.12 percent of emails were carrying malicious email attachments, or 1 in every 833, compared to 1 in every 1000 during August. This is primarily due to a coordinated campaign by hackers to spam out the Pushdo Trojan horse en masse during the second half of September. The emails, which pose as naked pictures of Hollywood actresses such as Angelina Jolie and "Holly Berry" [sic], carry a malicious payload
designed to give criminal hackers control over infected PCs. During a single 24-hour period in the last week of September, Sophos reports that the Pushdo Trojan for almost 4 in every 5 infected emails.

There are a lot of viruses out there. But some aren't really out there at all. Virus hoaxes are more than mere annoyances, as they may lead some users to routinely ignore all virus warning messages, leaving them vulnerable to a genuine, destructive virus.
Next time you receive an urgent virus warning message, be sure to check a list of known virus hoaxes .
Remember: Never open an email attachment unless you know what it is--even if it's from someone you know and trust.
Remember that virus writers can use known hoaxes to their advantage. For example, AOL4FREE began as a hoax virus warning. Then somebody distributed a destructive Trojan attached to the original hoax virus warning! I have been getting some unknown Emails in my inbox over and above the normal Spam.
These are usually titled 'A school friend is trying to contact you!' or 'You have been sent an E card from a worshipper!' or along those lines? I suspect that there is a wave of Email Viruses starting s0 be wary of your inbox! Here is an Interesting link about Hoax Emails called Hoax Busters.

What is it?
Symantec Security Response is currently monitoring a massive surge of email spam containing the threat Trojan.Peacomm (also known as the Storm Trojan). This spam surge is one of the largest identified surges in the last several months. This threat was originally discovered in January 2007 but has been repackaged in this particular spam surge. The specific characteristics of this attack have continued to evolve over time and this is simply the latest example of the attackers attempting to compromise large numbers of unprotected systems. This trojan horse arrives as an attachment to an email purporting to contain a security patch. The email appears to warn the user about a malicious threat and implies that the file attachment is a security patch that will protect the user from this threat. However, the attachment itself is a malicious threat. The email may have one of the following subject lines:
